How to remove a wasp nest if you are a complete plank

Wasp Nest

Now we all know that around this time of the year the infuriating buzzing bugs that we call wasps are out in full force. Unfortunately there is no escape from these little pests, they like to get in the way at the most inconvenient times. Most of the time they will buzz around when you are eating your food but will eventually clear off. However if you happen to get a wasp nest around your home this is slightly more serious. Going full steam ahead with no preparation or precautionary measures is always a good idea. Not!

Wear shorts and a vest

Trying to tackle a wasp nest while wearing shorts and a vest top is a great idea, having bare skin on show when working around wasps isn’t silly at all because it means you won’t get too hot and flustered.

Our advice: Wearing shorts and a vest is not the brightest idea. Make sure you are completely covered from head to toe. Wearing gloves is also a must. Trust me, if you have never been stung by a wasp before, it’s not a pleasant experience.

Remove it during the day

If you are planning to remove a wasp nest from your home, doing it during the day is the best time. This is when wasps are at their most active, they will be buzzing backwards and forwards from their nest all day so there is no chance of them getting in the way.

Our advice: Never remove a wasp nest during sunlight hours. During the day is when wasps are at their busiest. However they very rarely come out at night so this will be the best time to strike.

Remove it with your hands

Grab the wasp nest with your bare hands and shake it up and down so that all of the wasps come out of the nest. Then your problem is solved.

Our advice: Never do this! If you are going to remove a wasp’s nest by hand, it is extremely important to make sure you are fully covered. The trick is to quickly slip the nest inside a cloth bag and make sure it is tied shut. Then put the whole bag underwater and leave it there for a few days to make sure all the wasps have died.

Using pesticides

If you have chosen to use pesticides to remove the wasps nest then waiting until all of the wasps are out and about buzzing around the nest is the best idea. Also if you spray yourself with the pesticide don’t worry just rub it in.

Our advice: If you don’t fancy removing the nest by hand, try using pesticides for example Raid Fly and Wasp Killer or Rentokil Wasp Nest Killer Powder. Even if you are using pesticide it is important that you are fully covered as not only are the wasps a danger but the pesticide can also be harmful for your skin. Again make sure you act at night when the wasps will not be in action.

Removing a wasp nest can be dangerous but if it’s done the right way it can be done safely. If in doubt, give us a call or request a call back and we’ll deal with the problem for you.
